Northbrook is a village in Illinois, located in Cook County of Chicago. At Cork Catering, we often visit this area to cater for various events, including weddings & corporate functions. Northbrook was incorporated in 1991 and was formerly known as Shermerville in honor of a man known as Frederick Schermer. Schermer had donated the land for the purposes of building a train station. In 1923, the village’s name was changed to Northbrook in order to improve its public image. Some say that the name “Northbrook” was chosen since the North Branch of the Chicago River, West Fork, runs across the village.
Currently, Northbrook’s population is at around 35,000 residents. Northbrook is also home to some of America’s famous personalities like retired speed skaters Anne Henning & Dianne Holum, college basketball coach Billy Donlon and actress Wendy Braun. The village also produced novelist Meg Clayton and film producer John Hughes.
Northbrook is home to many public and private schools and people continue to seek to live here due to a shorter commute than other suburbs of Chicago. Small business, as well as big ones both thrive in Northbrook. Compared to the rest of the country, Northbrook's cost of living is a bit higher than the U.S. average, but the unemployment rate is consistently lower than that of the national average.
Activities & Attractions
For anyone visiting Northbrook for the first time, there are many attractions and activities to engage in. The Northbrook Park District provides and maintains more than 500 acres of land in 21 park areas, allowing for near endless opportunities for recreation, health and fitness.
If a park is your style, be sure to stop by Techny Prairie Park & Fields, a facility featuring a nine hole par three golf course, a large walking path, batting cages, four softball/baseball diamonds, a sledding hill, skate park, two picnic areas, two turf soccer fields and a playground. For historians & educational value, the village also hosts a public library which dates back to the time when the village was also known as Shermerville. Actually, the library traces its origin to a single room which was created by the Citizen’s Club of Shermerville. Initially, the library was operated from the village hall and the Shermerville School before an actual building was dedicated to it in 1954. The library has seen several expansions since its opening in 1969.
